Why Strength Training Is Important

So let’s start with busting the myth right off the bat; lifting weights will not make you ‘bulky’ unless it’s what you want. Muscle is hard-earned and generally creates a more toned and sculpted physique as muscle takes up less room in your body than fat. Now that we have that sorted let’s go over some facts on why strength training is important for everyone young, old, athletic, or sedentary, no matter your gender.

Everyone can get injured, it’s a fact of life but weights help to strengthen everything; muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, and organs, by not lifting you are at a higher risk of injury. Strength training for runners can be viewed as counterproductive as some people think it makes them heavier but this is just another myth we need to bust. Runners should undergo strength training in order to increase their endurance, a vital part of running.

Have you ever walked into a gym, you see people looking in the mirror, checking their form, looking the business? It can be intimidating but chances are they are self-conscious too but they are working through it in order to benefit their health. Everyone has to start somewhere, we are not born experts, we must learn, be guided, and be taught how to lift weights safely, and over time confidence will grow.

After years of working in commercial gyms, we noticed that the majority of clients disliked mirrors and how they looked whilst working out so much so that they were not able to focus on what really mattered, the training.

When Lift began strength training in Dublin we removed mirrors, we removed the barrier. We want people to tune into their bodies and reach their potential, not get caught up in how they look whilst training. So, now that we have no mirrors, they can work harder and get more out of the session without being self-conscious.
